The sun was setting and the shadows were growing long. Memorial Day had come to an end, but in its wake, it left a sense of peace and reflection for everyone who attended the ceremony.
The American flag slowly began swaying back and forth as people dispersed from the area; some with their heads bowed while others shook hands or embraced those around them.
It was hard not to feel like you were being watched by all those who came before you- every veteran of any branch, rank, or time period that has fought for this country’s freedom.
They weren’t just watching though – they were smiling with pride at what we had accomplished- proud of America once again because we still stand together despite our differences.
It was then that I realized they were looking down on us with pride, standing tall and strong as their legacy lives on.
It was a feeling unlike any other- one of honor, respect, and love for our country- the land we would all lay down our lives to protect if need be.
As Memorial Day comes around once again this year, let’s all take a moment to remember the fallen and honor those who are still fighting for our safety.
Memorial Day is a time to honor our fallen heroes. It’s also the perfect opportunity to show your support for America’s armed forces.

What is Memorial Day and why we celebrate it?
Memorial Day is a day to remember all the brave souls who died for their country.
This national US holiday was first established in 1868 and commemorates those that have fallen on or after April 27, 1865.
Memorial Day also marks the start of the summer season which means it’s time to enjoy barbeques!
What should I do on Memorial Day?
Every year on Memorial Day, Americans honor the many men and women who have died in military service to our country. There are many ways you can participate in this national day of remembrance including visiting memorials and special events all around St. Louis.
One way you can honor a loved one that sacrificed their life for our country is by placing your favorite flowers or plant at his/her grave site and say a prayer, thinking about all they did while living as well as how it felt when he/she passed away.
You could also visit a cemetery and take pictures of gravestones with patriotic items such as an American flag (decorations optional) laying over them.
It’s also customary to stop whatever you’re doing at noon on Memorial Day, in order to remember the fallen soldiers that sacrificed their lives so we could live ours.
