How To Make Southern Fried Fish

The southern fried fish is a Southern dish that has been around for centuries. It was originally served as the cheapest way to eat protein in the South, but now it’s seen as an iconic dish, and one of America’s most popular dishes.

Extra Crispy: The History of Southern Fried Fish. Recipes

In the 1800s, southern fried fish was a cheap way to feed your family. The first known recipe for it comes from a Louisiana cookbook that includes adding bread crumbs and spices like salt and pepper to striped bass before frying it.

In the 1900s, southern fried fish started getting a lot more complicated. Some recipes called for frying it in bacon fat or adding eggs and milk to the batter before dipping it into flour and then cooking.

Southern-fried fish is still popular now, but different variations have emerged over time (including beer-battered southern-fried catfish).
