- Banana pudding is a throwback dessert that never goes out of style.
- A different take on banana bread
Banana pudding bread or bananas baked in bread is a unique twist on the traditional banana bread recipe.
This delicious dessert has been around for decades and there are some interesting stories about its origins.
In the 19th century, bakers stored banana bread overnight in a box that also contained baking soda.
By morning, the baker would be ready to make their bread. However, when they returned at daybreak and opened the box, they found banana pudding instead!
BANANA PUDDING BREAD INGREDIENTS
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 stick (1/4 lb) butter
- 3 eggs, slightly beaten
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 4-5 medium bananas mashed lightly in a bowl with a fork until smooth.
Be careful not to mash too vigorously or the banana will start to brown.
Add the following ingredients – just mix them together and then add banana mixture:
- 1 cup milk ((If you don’t want it too sweet)),
- Your favorite flavor of KRAFT Philadelphia Cream Cheese—softened, about 3 tablespoons heavy cream, & cool whip topping if desired).
- Then finally stir in an additional 2/3 cup sugar (for added sweetness). Add the other banana ingredients and stir until blended.
BANANA PUDDING BREAD HEATING INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Grease a 9×5 inch loaf pan with butter, or line it with parchment paper on the bottom of the pan.
Now, that’s not a bad recipe for banana bread.
Banana pudding bread is a delightful recipe, usually made with flour, sugar, vanilla, eggs and cream of tartar.
It typically has chocolate chips in it as well.
A variation found in southern US recipes can be attributed to the Creole Praline Cake—a very popular dessert item over there.
Importantly, if you’ve never made banana bread before (perhaps your only experience is seeing those little refrigerated loaves that come in plastic wrappers) then this should not be your first foray into making cakes from scratch.
Since banana bread relies so heavily on the natural sweetness of bananas and is also tolerant of a lot more sugar than several other cake types (espcially custards like lemon), it’s best to perfect the banana bread recipe before you tackle a banana pudding bread recipe.
BANANA PUDDING BREAD RECIPE TIPS
This is important to remember if you have made banana bread in the past, since it has so many similarities with that recipe:
Don’t add too much flour when mixing bread or the dessert won’t be fluffy and will result in an overly dense bread.
Also, you should be very careful not to over-mix the banana pudding bread recipe, or it will develop gluten strands.
The result will be a tough and rubbery texture.
This is one of the few recipes where brown bananas are preferable to green ones since they add more flavor and don’t look as unappetizing.
Don’t be tempted to add too many of them, since those kind of bananas are notoriously fructose-rich and very sweet.
