Have you ever heard of American Idol? It is a popular reality television program that showcases the singing talents of young people from across the country. This show is basically a long-drawn out job interview.
Each contestant goes through a series of steps before they reach the popular judges on the show; Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell… eventually the viewers call specific 800 numbers to decide who wins the job to “Shut-Up and Sing.”
After being in the restaurant business for over 10 years, we found the two facts to retaining employees:
1. It’s not about the money. Yes, you need money to pay the bills. That’s why we offer our employees an above-industry standard commission for every catering job they refer to us and we offer a large employee referral bonus. Unfortunately and eventually, that will not be a good enough motivator to get a person out of bed. We ultimately, look for folks who are passionate about what they have learned over the years and our looking for a place to showcase their talents like Ruben Studdard.
2. Hiring on the spot doesn’t work. The multi-step audition/interview process is not only a filter for the employer, but for the prospective employee. Yes, it is tedious; however, after three weeks do you really want to wake up at O’ dark thirty in the morning? You may be fun to be with, have a nice smile and answer the right questions, but you know… you know deep down, you have have as much professional training as William Hung.
I wrote all that to actually say this… doesn’t it seem like most companies are either down-sizing or having a going-out-of-business sale?
We are not! We are actually hiring! We are looking for the next Ms. Piggies Smokehouse Idol Employee.
